Countdown to #HLM2016AIDS: AUA Contributes to Cambodia’s Position Paper

On June 8-10, the 2016 High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS (#HLM2016AIDS) will take place at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. With the aim of setting the world on course to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030, the meeting will focus on accelerating HIV/AIDS response in all UN member states – including Cambodia.

Cambodia’s country delegation, headed by His Excellency Ieng Mouly, Senior Minister in charge of Special Mission and Chair of the National AIDS Authority, will travel to New York to present the country’s Position Paper before the UN. The Position Paper is a short document that outlines Cambodia’s HIV/AIDS priority areas, providing a unique opportunity for the country’s concerns, achievements and goals to be voiced on the international stage.

On May 9, stakeholders from government, civil society and community based organizations met at the Hotel Cambodiana in Phnom Penh to formulate a draft for Cambodia’s Position Paper. Two AUA staff members attended the event and through this forum were able to make a direct contribution to the paper.

Suggestions for four priority areas were discussed and a draft document was produced. In the days following, AUA was able to play an active role reviewing the paper. As the key points and phrasing are finalized over the coming weeks, we look forward to seeing the final document take shape.

AUA would like to thank UNAIDS Cambodia for organizing this event.
